Description of System:
Clinical Music is played live and inconspiciously at the bedsides of patients in hospitals and hospices. No interaction or response is required of the patient. This is never a performance. Specific types of repertoire have been found to be beneficial for certain kinds of patients.
Diagnosis
Repertoire and mood of the music is chosen according to information gained from monitoring equipment, apparent condition of the patient, cultural considerations, and so on.
Scientific Studies
Thousands of studies have been done for every kind of patient, using several kinds of acoustic instruments. Results are overwhelmingly positive when the studies are responsibly and knowledgably planned and well implemented. Excellent results are also reported by patients and their families, as well as medical personnel. Monitoring equipment shows responses in vital sign changes during the music, and can be used to determine what to play from moment to moment.
The largest collection of studies I am aware of can be found on a CD ROM from the American Music Therapy Association
(AMTA), available from their website - a significant proportion of studies done by Music Therapists are applicable to my work.
